Is Memorial Day! I'm not joking, it really is!
Most of my readers have some idea why I love Memorial Day so much, but for those of you who aren't familiar with my favorite (now defunct) holiday tradition, let me enlighten you. I have the coolest grandparents in the world. Every Memorial Day up until about 6 years ago, they hosted a big breakfast at their home in CA. The food was always wonderful, there were always tons of friends, and we spent most of the morning eating and swimming. Memorial Day at grandmas was always tons of fun! After breakfast, which lasted thru the early afternoon, we'd head to the Bickmores for an early dinner! Hamburgers, hot dogs, and teasing courtesy of Charlie. And of course, the crowning glory of the day, homemade ice cream! At least 4 flavors. The ice cream would get lined up on top of the wall at the bottom of the driveway and all the kids would try to trick whoever was serving into giving them more. Grandpa was responsible for making the Miller contribution, well he was responsible for making it turn into ice cream, I'm sure grandma did everything else. I remember watching grandpa turn the crank on the ice cream maker, and I remember wondering why he was putting salt in the ice, I remember when he got an electric ice cream maker, and still wondering why he was putting salt in the ice, and I remember wondering why he had to make the ice cream in the garage! I was a lucky kid, I hope my kids love a holiday as much as I love Memorial Day. I hope they remember there favorite holiday because of the fond memories they have of it, not because they get a bunch of stuff! Thanks you Grandma and Grandpa, for being so awesome!
